Long Beach, California March 20: After three days of racing and always out in front, Simone Ferrarese and his team won the Ficker Cup, the match race of Grade 2 hosted by the Long Beach Yacht Club, and qualified for the Congressional Cup, the event which will bring together the top specialists of match racing.
Yesterday, March 19, on a day with 12 knots of wind, having won the Round Robin and the quarter-finals in the previous days, the Ferrarese Racing Team won the semi-finals beating the American Chris Nesbitt. The Italian crew then went on to beat the team skippered by New Zealand’s William Tiller in the final (2-1) and won the Ficker Cup. Apart from leaving Tiller’s team behind, the Italian crew also defeated the boat skippered by the American Bob Hughes (with Australia’s Torvar Mirsky as tactician), which finished second and third respectively.
Clearly satisfied with the result, Simone Ferrarese stated over the phone: “I’m very happy to have won this prestigious trophy which, in the past, had been awarded to such great match race professionals as Scott Dickson, John Kostecki and Terry Hutchinson. I want to thank my crew, who really worked well together, with maximum concentration and professionalism. It’s also an honor to have won a place in the Congressional Cup, that will see the top teams in the world ranking list taking part.”
The Ferrarese Racing Team, in the colors of the Yacht Club Cortina d’Ampezzo, thus remains at Long Beach in California to take part in the Congressional Cup on Tuesday, 22 March. Also participating in the event, raced on the Catalina 37’, will be the Sicilian Francesco Bruni, Mathieu Richard from France and Ian Williams from England who hold respectively eighth, third and fifth positions in the world match race rankings.

Ieri, 19 marzo, in una giornata con 12 nodi di vento, il Ferrarese Racing Team, dopo aver vinto il Round Robin e i quarti di finale nei giorni precedenti, ha battuto in semifinale lo statunitense Chris Nesbitt. Successivamente Ferrarese ha sconfitto in finale, con un 2-1, il team neozelandese di William Tiller aggiudicandosi la Ficker Cup e lasciandosi alle spalle oltre all’equipaggio di Tiller anche quello statunitense di Bob Hughes (con l’australiano Torvar Mirsky alla tattica) che hanno chiuso rispettivamente al secondo e al terzo posto.
Simone Ferrarese al telefono, palesemente soddisfatto racconta: “sono molto contento di aver conquistato questo prestigioso trofeo che, in passato, era andato a grandi professionisti del match race come Scott Dickson, John Kostecki e Terry Hutchinson. Voglio ringraziare il mio equipaggio che ha lavorato in piena sintonia, con grande concentrazione e professionalità. E’ inoltre un onore aver conquistato un posto alla Congressional Cup, in cui sfideremo equipaggi che si trovano ai primi posti della ranking list mondiale.”
Il Ferrarese Racing Team, portacolori dello Yacht Club Cortina d’Ampezzo, resta dunque a Long Beach in California dove martedì 22 marzo prenderà il via la Congressional Cup. All’evento che si disputerà sempre a bordo dei Catalina 37’, parteciperanno, tra gli altri, il siciliano Francesco Bruni, il francese Mathieu Richard e l’inglese Ian Williams rispettivamente all’ottavo, terzo e quinto posto della ranking list mondiale di match race.
